How to Keep Your Dog Comfortable During Hot Weather

Summer heat can be tough on our furry friends. Dogs don't regulate body temperature the way humans do, which means they're more vulnerable to overheating and heat-related stress. If you're a dog parent, keeping your pup cool and comfortable during hot weather is essential for their health and happiness.

Provide Plenty of Fresh Water

The most important thing you can do is ensure your dog always has access to clean, fresh water. During hot weather, dogs need to drink more frequently to stay hydrated. Keep water bowls in multiple locations around your home and yard, and refill them regularly throughout the day. If you're heading out, bring a portable water bowl and bottle so your dog can drink on the go.

Create Cool Resting Spaces

Give your dog a shaded area where they can escape the heat. This could be a spot under a tree, on a porch, or inside your home with air conditioning. Consider using cooling mats or beds designed to help regulate body temperature. You can also freeze a damp towel and let your dog lie on it for relief.

Adjust Exercise Schedules

Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day. Instead, take walks and playtime during early morning or evening hours when temperatures are cooler. Keep outdoor sessions shorter and watch for signs of overheating like excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy.

Use Cooling Techniques

A refreshing bath or splash in a kiddie pool can work wonders on a hot day. You can also use a spray bottle to mist your dog's coat, or let them enjoy a frozen treat like dog-safe ice cream or frozen broth. Some dogs love cooling vests or bandanas that you can wet and tie around their neck.

Never Leave Your Dog in a Hot Car

This is critical—even with windows cracked, a car can reach dangerous temperatures within minutes. Always leave your dog at home in a cool environment when you run errands.

Watch for Heat Stress Signs

Know the warning signs of heat exhaustion: excessive panting, weakness, drooling, vomiting, or collapse. If you notice any of these symptoms, move your dog to a cool area immediately and contact your veterinarian.

With a little extra care and attention during the hot months, your dog can stay comfortable and safe all summer long.
