How to Measure Your Dog for the Right Collar Size

Finding the perfect collar fit for your pup is one of those small details that makes a big difference in their comfort and safety. A collar that's too tight can restrict movement and cause discomfort, while one that's too loose risks slipping off during walks or playtime. Let's walk through the simple steps to measure your dog for the right collar size.

What You'll Need

Grab a soft measuring tape—the kind used for sewing works perfectly. If you don't have one on hand, a piece of string and a ruler will do the trick. You'll also want to have your dog's current collar nearby for reference, if they're already wearing one.

Measure Your Dog's Neck

Have your dog sit or stand in a relaxed position. Gently wrap the measuring tape around the base of their neck, where a collar would naturally sit. Keep the tape snug but not tight—you should be able to slip one or two fingers underneath comfortably. This is the key to a proper fit. Write down this measurement in inches.

Account for Growth and Comfort

If you have a puppy, remember that they'll grow quickly. Consider measuring them every few weeks and sizing up as needed. For adult dogs, add about half an inch to your measurement to ensure the collar has room for comfort and adjustment. This extra space prevents the collar from being too restrictive while your pup moves, plays, and grows.

Check the Fit

Once your new collar arrives, put it on your dog and do the finger test again. You should always be able to fit one to two fingers between the collar and their neck. If it's too tight, size up. If it's too loose, consider sizing down or adjusting the fit if your collar has multiple sizing options.

Taking a few minutes to measure correctly means your furry friend will be comfortable, safe, and ready for all your adventures together.
